Los Angeles Mission!

* Mission Statement *

The Los Angeles Mission exists to provide help,

hope,and opportunity to men, women and children in need.

“The Los Angeles Mission exists to serve the homeless living on the streets of downtown’s Skid Row. For more than 70 years, we have saved many lives and have had a profound impact on thousands of others by providing compassionate, humanitarian services to those in desperate need.

Homeless people today struggle with more debilitating habits than just alcoholism. Drugs play a large part in street homelessness. Crack cocaine is the preferred drug for most homeless drug addicts, but there is no shortage of choices. Other drugs also devastate and kill. Physical and emotional abuse produces climate of fear while many fall prey to their own imprudent sexual practices and still others – especially women – are victims of sexual, physical and emotional abuse or abandonment. Issues surrounding education, employment, healthcare and affordable housing continue to plague those in our community. The Los Angeles Mission strives to reach out to every individual and offer help & hope as they face their unique needs.

By volunteering, you are part of the solution for homelessness and urban poverty. Be a part of something bigger than yourself. Volunteers are vital to the heartbeat of the Los Angeles Mission. With the support of hundreds of volunteers, the Mission can significantly effect change in the lives of the destitute and homeless.”

We had the wonderful privilege of getting to volunteer at the Los Angeles Mission. Unaware of the horrors of LA traffic, we arrived a little late, but were scheduled to volunteer two days in a row starting at 9:30 a.m. We ended up staying both days until about two.

We spent the mornings doing paper work, folding and stamping… and inputting computer data. We  joined everyone for lunch in a large cafeteria. Surprisingly,  In-N-Out burgers were being served, along with many side dishes and an open salad bar.  In and Out comes to the facility one a month and cooks burgers on site for all the guests.  What support!

Vision Statement
“The Los Angeles Mission strives to be a world leader among missions that provides for the poor,restores the addicted, and eliminates homelessness. “

Sandra Rawls welcomed us with open arms and gave us a tour of the entire facility, teaching us about it’s history and mission. Sandra has done a complete 360 herself, and thanks the structure of the program and all the opportunities offered for her success.  Meet Sandra!

Good Luck with everything Sandra, we will be thinking about you!!

We spent the afternoons with Ricardo Medina. We greatly enjoyed speaking with him as we folded and sorted through clothes. He has a ginormous heart and loves being outside in nature.  He told us many hiking stories, and suggests a few good spots to us.  We loved Ricadro right away and wish him well.

Looking for a fun way to volunteer at your local homeless shelter?  A lot of these guys are picking their new clothes out carefully and want to look fresh.  A couple were asking me what shirt would go best with what pants…Get in there and help these guys dress to kill!! You may be part of the reason they give their job interviewer a good first impression- isn’t that awesome?!
